A Shell to Grow Into: Introducing Pagurus Books

Every hermit crab begins life too small for the world it’s about to enter. It finds a shell — borrowed, imperfect, someone else’s first — and carries it until it outgrows that one too, and has to go looking again. It is a creature defined not by what it builds, but by what it’s willing to leave behind in order to grow.

That’s the image we chose to carry with us.

Pagurus Books is a new publishing house founded on a simple belief: that the right words find you exactly when you’re ready to grow from them. We begin with books for children — the earliest shells we all carry, built with care for small hands and curious minds. It’s where every reader starts, and it felt like the right place for us to start too.

We didn’t want a name that announced itself loudly. We wanted one that meant something quietly, and kept meaning it the longer you looked. Pagurus — the genus name for the hermit crab — felt right: unglamorous, a little strange, entirely honest about the fact that none of us grow alone, and none of us stay the same shape for long.

This is just the beginning of the shell. We hope you’ll grow into it with us.
